Don't accept the first offer. Scrap yards pay £150-£400 based on weight, but parts-based buyers like us pay £500-£10,000+ for modern vehicles.
Gather Your Documents
You'll need your V5C logbook (or know you've lost it), photo ID, and ideally proof of address. Service history is a bonus.
Prepare Your Car
Remove all personal belongings, check the boot, glove box, door pockets. Remove any aftermarket accessories you want to keep (sat nav, dash cam, etc.).
Collection Day
Be present to hand over keys and sign paperwork. Check the buyer is who they say they are. Get proof of payment before they leave.
DVLA Notification
The DVLA must be notified within 2 weeks. Licensed ATFs do this automatically. Otherwise, complete Section 9 of your V5C and post it to the DVLA.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Using Unlicensed Dealers
Unlicensed scrap dealers can't issue valid CODs and may not notify the DVLA. You could remain liable for the vehicle.
Accepting Cash Only
Cash transactions over certain amounts can be suspicious. Legitimate buyers offer bank transfers with clear paper trails.
Not Notifying DVLA
Failure to notify DVLA can result in parking tickets, speeding fines, and tax penalties arriving at your address.
Taking First Offer
Scrap yards pay based on weight. Parts-based valuations can be 3-10x higher for modern vehicles. Always compare.
