    Cambridge Car Selling FAQs

Cambridge, Restricted Streets and the Cost of Storing a Non-Runner

Cambridge is one of the most parking-constrained cities in England outside London. Permit zones cover almost the entire CB1-CB5 area, central streets are crisscrossed with bus gates and access restrictions, and a non-running car sat outside a Romsey or Mill Road terrace quickly becomes a PCN target. Add an unusually high concentration of ex-private-hire hybrids around the city and the result is a lot of older Toyotas, VW diesels and small hatchbacks reaching the end of their economic life every year.

We buy non-runners across the whole CB area, including hybrids with battery degradation, common diesel faults like DSG shudder and timing chain rattle, and high-mileage commuter cars. See our non-runner vs scrap value guide for typical price ranges.

    More Cambridge Non-Runner Questions

I work at one of the colleges or Addenbrooke's — can you collect during the day from restricted-access streets?

Yes. Central Cambridge has heavy access restrictions, bus gates and controlled parking. We pre-book bay suspensions where needed and our compact flatbeds can work the narrow streets around Trumpington Street, Mill Road and the colleges without disruption.

Does Cambridge have a Clean Air Zone?

Not currently for private vehicles. Cambridge has been consulting on congestion charging and air quality measures, but as of now there is no daily charge for private cars. Most non-runner sales here are driven by parking restrictions, the cost of repairs, and high running costs rather than CAZ charges.

Are ex-private-hire Priuses welcome? There are a lot of them around Cambridge.

Yes — we buy a lot of them. High-mileage Prius and Auris hybrids with tired traction batteries are one of the most common non-runners we collect from CB1 and CB4. We base offers on what the shell, hybrid components and engine are worth as parts.

Do you cover the South Cambs villages and the Science Park area?

Yes. Free collection across all CB postcodes including Sawston, Histon, Waterbeach, Cottenham, the Science Park (CB4) and the biomedical campus around Addenbrooke's (CB2).

Will you buy an older diesel I can't easily sell privately because of low-emission concerns?

Yes. Even though Cambridge has no CAZ, older diesels are increasingly hard to sell privately because buyers worry about future restrictions and ULEZ-style rollouts. We pay based on the car's value as a non-runner, not its emissions rating.
